Delay to disability benefit payment is ‘unlawful’, rules High Court9th June 2015
The High Court has ruled that the delay in payments of Personal Independence Payments (PIPs) to two disabled people was ‘unlawful’ and took an ‘unacceptably long time’. The two claimants have said that the nine month delays left them struggling to pay for food and essentials.
PIPs are a disability benefit designed to meet the extra cost of living with a disability. They replace Disability Living Allowance but claims have been mired with delays. The BBC reports that “there are currently 78,700 people waiting to hear if they can claim PIPs, of whom 3,200 have waited more than a year to have their claims processed, and 22,800 have waited more than 20 weeks.”
