Learning and Work responds to parliamentary report on transgender equality14th January 2016
In response to the publication of the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee’s report on their inquiry into transgender equality, Joyce Black, Assistant Director – Research and Development at Learning and Working Institute, said:
“We know from our work as a member of the Forum for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity that transgender equality remains a stubborn taboo in the sector, so we welcome the select committee’s report and the way it shines a spotlight on the problems in FE and Skills. We should all take the time to digest what the report has to say and recognise our responsibilities to end bullying and discrimination in our institutions.
“It is acutely alarming that the Committee has heard evidence that further education institutions can be more hostile learning environments for transgender students than higher education institutions.
“February is LGBT History Month, a time for us to reflect on effective and replicable practices in ending discrimination and celebrate the role of LGBT people in society. Learning and Work Institute will be hosting online training sessions in February for staff and learners to share the findings of an important report from the Forum for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in February.”
