Response to the Prime Minister’s prison reform speech8 February 2016
In response to the Prime Minister’s announcement today regarding prison reform, Stephen Evans, Deputy CEO at Learning and Work Institute, said:
“Almost one in two prisoners re-offend within a year of release: that is no good for their life chances, their victims or society. The Prime Minister is right to call attention to this and commit to building a prison system fit for the 21st century. We’ve been working in this field for a long time and we know that addressing education and skills are at the heart of reducing reoffending.
“The commitment to secure existing education budgets, underpinned by transparency over the outcomes achieved is welcome. The new Reform Prisons provide an outstanding opportunity. We engaged closely in Dame Sally Coates’ review of prison education, and I’m particularly pleased that our calls for a more holistic approach to prison education, underpinned by better intelligence to inform an outcomes based approach are central to today’s announcements”.
