What adults need to get into learning and succeed17 October 2014
Recent policy, research and practice which has motivated adults learning English and maths, was the focus of NIACE’s annual conference with NRDC, RaPAL and UCU, held in London.
Attendees at the fully-booked conference participated in a number of workshops and heard about the latest in research, policy and best practice from:
- Elspeth Kirkman, Principal Advisor and Head, Education and Skills, The Behavioural Insights Team
- Norma Honey, Associate Director, NCETM
- David Mallows, Director of Research from NRDC, Institute of Education
- Cheryl Turner, NIACE Senior Associate Research Fellow
Dr Fiona Aldridge, Assistant Director for Development and Research at NIACE, said:
“Motivation is critical for not only getting people into learning, but also helping them to succeed. In order to best support learners, providers must be aware of their goals and reasons for learning. Provision has to be flexible, with support to tackle existing and potential barriers. Friends, family and initiatives like Union Learning Reps and Community Learning Champions also play a vital role.
“There are a number of challenges currently facing the sector. The focus on GCSEs, elements of mandated learning – for example with Job Centre Plus (JCP) – as well as the ongoing difficulty in ensuring provision is accessible and engaging for adults with low levels of skills. Today’s conference will help practitioners and researchers to explore different ways to help motivate adults to take part in literacy and numeracy learning and to succeed.”
