Step-change in loans ‘not happening’

8th January 2015

Responding to the latest data on 24+ advanced learning loans applications, published today, David Hughes, NIACE Chief Executive, said:

“Over the last 5 years more than 500,000 people have missed out on learning and skills – which supports them in the labour market – because of reductions to FE funding. The introduction of loans has played a significant part in this.

“We always expected loans to impact on participation, and the numbers have been dramatically hit in professional and technical qualifications. What we had hoped was for numbers to really bounce-back in this, the second year of loans. That step change in loan take-up is clearly not happening.

“We call on the government to take urgent action to address this, including an indefinite delay to extend loans.”
