It all starts with that first step

7 March 2017

It’s hard to believe but when I look at myself today I can hardly recognise the woman I have become. Only two years ago I suffered from agoraphobia and had not left my home alone in over four years.

In the last two years I have defiantly been making up for lost time. I have completed over twenty courses including level two English and Maths, craft, sewing, first aid and jewellery making. It was very difficult at first but the tutors at Lifelong Learning were all very helpful and accommodated me extremely well, I also have to wear hearing aids and they made sure I was sat in a place where I could hear properly.

Starting out on my first course took a lot of courage but I feel you should take a leap of faith and trust that you can do it, you can achieve if you believe. I have taken courses in things with certificates but also ones just for fun, the jewellery course was great and I am now able to share the skills I have learnt with other women from the Inspire Women’s Centre where I now volunteer.

I believe that everyone should give it a go there are so many different courses out there to suit all interests. From courses designed to help you back in to work or to further your career, to ones simply for pleasure and to meet new people. I am now taking the GCSE English course which is a three year course in nine months.

Never in a million years did I think when I first started on that very first course with lifelong learning that I would be able to work towards a GCSE. It goes to show you can get back to learning at any point in your life, it all starts with that first step.

For anyone thinking of getting back into learning who are unsure of what to do I suggest doing something you love first. That’s what sparked my love of learning and after that first course I was eager to enrol onto others. Being able to look back at all the courses I have achieved makes me feel very proud of how far I have come, and there is a lot more out there for me to do. Whatever your interest there is sure to be something for you, pick up a brochure and get started on your learning journey.
