After employment had reached a record high at the start of this year, the coronavirus has triggered an unprecedented economic crisis and a rapid rise in unemployment. New labour market statistics – released on 16 June – showed for the first time the scale and nature of the impact of the crisis on employment across the UK.

What does the data tell us about the impact of the crisis? Which groups of workers and which areas have been hit hardest? How effective has the policy response been and what needs to happen now to get Britain back to work?
